ITA! That is definitely the point of the book. That's why this chapter is called "Big Organic". The next entry is about some awesome sustainable "beyond organic" farms. I'm just not done yet, lol. I definitely don't think that all organic farmers are bad AT ALL, I'm just trying to work through the book with my comments, hehe. I promise I'll show the other side!

these are great points, all of them. I just want to point out that there are a lot of great actual small family farms in existence. they don't sell to whole foods, but there are farmers who raise chickens and cattle that are actually pastured and live decent lives. And some stores are honest in their advertising. I really have gained trust in our local coop. they do their homework about all their suppliers and seem to find the best options available.
They stopped selling Horizon Organics a few years ago and published an article in the newsletter about why, and I've never seen anything from Cascadian in the store.
I would just hate for anyone to think that all Organic farming is a crock. I think it's more like not all organic farms are equal, and big busines is usually big business, not real farming.
BTW, have you read any Wendell Berry? He's great on all these issues. Thanks so much for your take. I love this blog!
In part, one reason I'm not a vegan is because if it weren't for the few really great farmers out there, there wouldn't be any well-cared for farm animals on the planet. It would be all agri-business or virtual extinction.
