Hi!

Can you give some examples of the verses that you're referring to? I did a word study a while back, and I will go grab my notes for each of the verses :) It seems that Bible translations vary greatly on how they interpret "discipline" vs. "punish". Some of the older translations use the words interchangeably, whereas some of the more literal translations are clearer in that it is discipline.

As far as God punishing us for our sins. Isn't that why Christ died? Was his work not complete on the cross?

2 Corinthians 5:8All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Hebrews 9:15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

Have you read Crystal's article about this?

There have been some wonderful discussions of this over at GCM. I'm going to link you to a few.

Hi, I have read Heartfelt Discipline; and Bibli biblical Parenting by Crystal Lutton. I am trying to understand that God does not punish us.

Crytal says on her website that God set up a natural consequence from the beginning that the wages of sin is death. I believe when we sin we experience these natural consequences because God removes his blessings and protection from sin.
But on that not I am still confussed...in the Bible there are numerous verses that say God punishes the us. And it uses this word over and over again.
Can you help shed some light on this. I have a book I just bought called leading little ones to God and there will be a lesson coming up that I am suppose to read that teaches that God punishes us for our sins. And it also says that when we are naughty...it uses that word a lot too.
I am trying to teach my children in a graced based way and not punitive. And help or advice would be great.
Blessings,
Danielle
